Aerial Unit R-21/X Mount: Source and Farming Guide

The aerial unit mount is the Aerial Unit R-21/X, a mechanical flying mount that drops from Mekkatorque in the Battle of Dazar'alor raid, and only there. The drop rate is low, roughly 1 percent per kill, and the mount can drop on every difficulty, including Looking for Raid. There is no vendor, no quest and no currency route.

You can attempt it once per week per difficulty with a normal lockout, and extra attempts come from bonus rolls or from alts.

Where the Aerial Unit R-21/X Mount Drops

Mekkatorque is the sixth boss of Battle of Dazar'alor on the Alliance side. On the Horde side, the same fight happens as part of the Alliance-aligned wing and the encounter is called Mekkatorque as well, so the loot is the same for both factions. The raid sits in Zuldazar on Zandalar.

The fight is a four-phase engineering encounter against a gnomish king in a mech suit. A full clear takes around 90 minutes on normal, and the single boss itself takes about 8 to 10 minutes once your group knows the mechanics.

Because it is a drop from a boss in an older raid, you no longer need a full guild. Solo queueing through Looking for Raid works, and a pre-made group on Normal or Heroic is faster than waiting for a random queue.

R21X and Aerial Unit Mount Requirements

Players often search for the shorthand r21x. It refers to the same mount, so you do not need a second source.

  • Level 60 or higher to enter, with the raid scaling to your level
  • No flying skill required once you have the mount in a zone where flying is allowed
  • Account-wide collection, so any character on your account can ride it after the first drop
  • Not tied to Mythic difficulty, so you can farm it casually

The mount is a flyer, but check the zone rules. In Dragon Isles zones and in current content, Dragonriding rules apply, and a standard flyer may use the normal flight mode on the older continents instead.

Best Way to Farm the Aerial Unit Mount

Run Mekkatorque once a week per character. If you have ten level 80 characters, you get ten tries, which is about a 10 percent chance over a single week.

Normal and Heroic lockouts are separate, so doing both doubles your attempts on each character. Mythic gives you another lockout on top of that, though it is the hardest fight to clear.

Quick routing tips

Skip the first five bosses if you can queue directly into the wing, and use the raid finder queue for the last-boss wing when you only want Mekkatorque. That saves 30 to 45 minutes per week.

Bonus rolls

If you have spare bonus rolls from older seasons, spend them on the boss. A bonus roll gives another shot at the mount loot table with no extra lockout.

Similar Rare Mounts Worth Chasing

If you are building a collection of hard-to-get rides, a few others have the same grind feel. The violet spellwing is a rare drop from a different world boss chain and has a long grind of its own. Players who finish this one often move on to the ur zul mount from a Legion-era dungeon, which is another low-chance drop. For something more cinematic, the uncorrupted voidwing mount comes from a Ny'alotha fight and is another long-term target.

None of these guarantee a drop, so track your attempts and pace yourself.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I get the Aerial Unit R-21/X on Looking for Raid?

Yes. The mount can drop on Looking for Raid, Normal, Heroic and Mythic. Looking for Raid is the easiest option for most players, since you can queue solo and the fight is forgiving.

What is the drop rate?

It is about 1 percent per kill, so most players need several weeks of attempts. Some get it on the first week, and some take over 100 runs. Treat it as a lottery and bring patience.

Is the mount account-wide?

Yes. Once it drops on any character, it joins your collection for every character on your account, including future alts.

Can I fly it in every zone?

Mostly yes, as long as the zone allows flying and you have unlocked flight there. Some current-content zones restrict standard flyers, so check the in-game rules for each area.

Do I need to kill all the bosses first?

No. You can queue for the wing that contains Mekkatorque, or enter with a group and clear only what you need. A solo Looking for Raid wing run takes around 30 minutes.
